Daily Times, 9/23/05 - The administration of the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI) of
Engineering Sciences and Technology in Topi recently launched a crackdown on pornography
on campus, breaking into students’ rooms and confiscating their computers’ hard drives
in their absence.
Sources told Daily Times a notice had been issued by the administration in the first week of September, asking students to delete all pornographic content from their personal computers by September 11. On September 9, around 100 final year students left on an official trip to Kaghan. On the same day, another notice was issued by the administration, ordering a deletion of all pornography from personal computers on campus by 5 pm, sources said. That evening, a number of faculty members, accompanied by hostel wardens, began conducting random raids on hostels. They checked students’ computers for pornography and confiscated their hard drives if any ‘offensive material’ was found. In case a student was not in his room - a number of students were not on the institute premises, having gone on the official trip - the administration representatives broke into their rooms after appointing bystanders as “witnesses”, and confiscated their hard drives. Sources said the administration claimed it had implemented this crackdown to handle “the porn problem of GIKI.” Students who had gone on the trip, on their return, were infuriated at the search of their rooms and confiscation of their property. In a meeting arranged with the higher officials of the administration, sources said the students expressed annoyance that the deadline had been pushed up in their absence without their knowledge, and their rooms had been search without their consent. They said this amounted to a breach of their right to privacy, sources reported. The administration presented its reasons behind the raids in the meeting, sources said. Describing the raid as an ‘undesirable but necessary step,’ the GIKI Rector told students that the administration had been entrusted by the students’ parents to monitor their mental growth, to which pornography was a hindrance. Sources told Daily Times that the raids had been effective, as the sharing and possession of pornography had gone down to a minimum.
