ISLAMABAD, Pakistani Newspaper, Sep 17, 2005 - In a countrywide campaign against illegal
Cable Operators and Pornography since April, Pakistan Electronic Media Authority (PEMRA)
has closed down 560 illegal Cable TV Operators and taken serve action against 86 Cable
Operators showing pornographic and unethical contents in their network and fined them to
the tune of one million rupees.
The Spokesman of the authority told Online that showing pornographic and unethical contents was a clear-cut violation of authority's code of ethics or poor quality services in violation of Section 26 clause 5 of the PEMRA Ordinance. The spokesman of the authority told Online that the authority was receiving complaints from all over the country against various legal and illegal Cable TV Operators for providing some pornographic channels and programmes through their cable networks from time to time. The Authority has taken number of steps to control the propagation of obscenity and pornography by the Cable TV Operators including about 1250 licenced Cable TV Operators have been informed through letters to dawn upon them the importance of our cultural values, he said. He said that PEMRA Field Staff has conducted 4941 inspection raids on cable operators, head-ends for quality and service check. He said that the authority had warned Cable Operators to desist from pornography and obscenity improve their service quality and address the public complaints promptly in consonance with PEMRA Technical Standards and Code of Conduct prescribed by the authority. "If they continue persisted in violating the code of conduct, equipments and other gadgets of the errant Cable Operators would be seized," he said.
