University of Wisconsin, Advance Titan, 10/5/05 - Gail Dines, and her presentation on “Pornography
and the Media: Images of Violence against Women,” was considered a great success by the
University Speaker Series.
Her presentation cost the University approximately $3,500 and was co-sponsored by The Women’s Advocacy Council and Take Back the Night. Although Dines speech began as humorous, it quickly turned into an eye-opening experience for not only the women in the audience, but the men as well. She began by stating how the porn industry uses the image of the girl-next-door as a sex object in pictures and videos. This allows the man to believe that she is obtainable, making the fantasy come alive for him. The first publication of Playboy sold out in the first day due to the amount of advertising by the company. Dines stated that in today’s market, it would be impossible for the company to make a profit by just selling magazines. Magazines such as Playboy and Penthouse now only stay in business because of their Web sites. These Web sites promote not only violence against women, but also brutality and rape. Dines says that these online publications show women who are tied up and beaten, and these images are considered sexual. “The people who create these images are very sophisticated and the consumers are ignorant to the images of seduction,” Dines stated. She stated that pornography is not only sexist, but racist as well, with a lot of the images in porn today focusing on the black man brutally raping the white woman. Dines put an image of a naked Asian woman hanging from a tree onto the screen. The image appeared as a sexual photo in Hustler Magazine when the magazine first came out. “Pornography takes violence against women and sexualizes it. This is what porn does best,” Dines stated. Steffan Boyd, a sophomore, agrees with Dines on most of the topics she brought up, but was disappointed she didn’t mention how some women use the porn industry to their advantage. “They want to do it for the money, and yah it looks degrading, but she didn’t touch on that they do it for the money,” Boyd said. Ashley Lemke, a freshman, agreed with Boyd’s view on the speaker. “I agree with her on some things, but she hinted that all porn was bad, and I don’t agree that all porn is bad,” Lemke said. Dines states that her argument against the porn industry is not just one of a feminist “man-hater,” and that the real man-haters are the porn industry. She states that the porn industry considers the man to be an ignorant consumer who is oblivious to the message of violence against women. Dines also stated that the future of pornography is technology, especially on cell phones. She states that in order for pornography and exploitation of women to stop, there must be alliances made with men and women, and that communication between the two groups must be opened.
