The Buffalo News, 8/25/06 - The national chain Family Video and Movie Club does rent out pornography, but it won't offer any X-rated movies in its new Erie and Niagara counties stores.

"We will not be carrying them," said Todd L. Bezenah, the company's New York State regional director. [The decision] is made on a community-by-community basis."

The company's first Buffalo-area location will open Aug. 27, at 1970 Colvin Blvd., at Brighton Road, in the Town of Tonawanda.

There are plans to open stores in Amherst, Lockport and Niagara Falls. And leaders in those communities were unaware the Illinois-based company rents X-rated movies along with the usual video-chain rentals.

Elected officials became alarmed after a Buffalo News story revealed the company's mixed selection of movies.

Though Amherst's building commissioner reportedly was told by company officials that there would be no X-rated fare, Councilwoman Shelly Schratz authored a motion, which was unanimously approved Monday by the Town Board, notify the chain that the board doesn't want X-rated movies.

Schratz couldn't be reached for comment Thursday night.

But Bezenah said it was never in the plans for the new area stores. In the Town of Tonawanda's case, codes restrict businesses dealing in adult films, books and other materials to areas zoned industrial. Bezenah called Tonawanda Ronald H. Supervisor Wednesday to clear up things.

"Mr. Bezenah was most accommodating, gracious and willing to offer assurances that adult-rated movies would not be available that location," Moline said.

The new store will be replacing a gas station abandoned 10 years ago.

"The new building is going to be a vast improvement," Moline said. "We look forward to doing business with them and welcoming them soon."
