Belladonna got into the porn movie industry after she moved to Los Angeles to become a nude model. When that didn't work out, she tried porn.

She was engaged to fellow porn actor Nacho Vidal. In April, 2004, she married Aiden Kelly. Belladonna has a daughter, Myla Kelly, who was born in January, 2005.

Belladonna has a large Chinese dragon tattoo on the front of her left shoulder, snaking down over her left breast. When she performs in movies with a higher production value (for studios such as VCA and Hustler) she has been known to wear a variety of (frequently rather incongruous) garments that cover only her shoulders. She has nine other tattoos, including a sacred heart. While naturally a blonde, she frequently dyes her hair black.

Her career in the porn business was followed for two years by a crew from ABC Television, culminating in a January 2003 interview with Diane Sawyer as part of a Primetime segment on porn. Following its broadcast Belladonna condemned what she felt had been unfair treatment at the hands of Sawyer and the ABC staffers, saying the segment had portrayed her as a victim and that the interview was edited to convey the misleading impression that she had been forced to perform against her will. The interview has since been used by a number of anti-porn pressure groups to support their case that porn is exploitative of the women who appear in it. She owns her own production company, Belladonna Entertainment, which produces both her own movies and is contracted with distributor Evil Angel to produce several movies directed by Belladonna.

Belladona has been nominated for 42 AVN Awards, of which she has won 10. In 2011 she was inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame.
