Ai Iijima was born Mitsuko Ishii on October 31, 1972. She died on December 24, 2008. 

In her late teens, she appeared on late night television as a "T-back girl," or girls wearing skimpy thongs (sometimes topless) or under short skirts. She later became a porn star. Iijima crossed over into mainstream television and appears in travel, lifestyle, and quiz shows.

In 2000 she published Platonic Sex, a semi-autobiographical novel about a young girl leaving home to escape her parents and ending up as an adult movie star. The book was turned into a television series and a movie in 2001.

On December 24, 2008, Iijima was found dead in her 21st floor Tokyo apartment. She was found lying face-down on the floor when medics forced their way into her place. She had been dead for about 7 days. The pathology examination showed she died of pneumonia and that there was no suggestion of suicide or murder.
